Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine, pre-sterilized, disposable needles into specific points of the body to stimulate the nervous system in predictable ways. These neuro-reactive points are usually along the spine and near the treated area. Often there are points situated far from the area of complaint that have been shown to affect the treated condition. Low or medium frequency electrical stimulation may be attached to the needles to help boost the treatment's effectiveness.
